Wprawdzie wyprawa po zachodniej części Stanów Zjednoczonych już za nami (albo tak nam się bynajmniej na tamtą chwilę wydawało), to wcale nie oznaczało końca naszych małych i większych podróży. Zainspirowani wyśmienitą kuchnią włoską, jaką mieliśmy okazję skosztować w USA, min. tutaj, postanowiliśmy wybrać się na iście włoski weekend do stolicy Lombardii, Mediolanu! Swoją drogą bezcenna była reakcja taty A., który zaraz po tym jak oznajmiliśmy mu, gdzie się wybieramy, z niedowierzaniem wykrzyknął: "Ale jak to?! Do tej włoskiej mafii?!". Poniżej skrót tego, co udało nam się zobaczyć podczas naszego pierwszego dnia w światowej stolicy mody.

Although our trip to the western United States is already behind us (or so we thought), it does not mean the end of our small and larger journey. Inspired by the delicious Italian cuisine, that we had the opportunity to taste in the U.S., like here, we decided to go for a truly Italian weekend to the capital of Lombardy, Milan! By the way, the A. dad's reaction was priceless, who as soon as we told him where we plan to go, with disbelief exclaimed, "But why? To this Italian Mafia?". Below overview of what we have seen during our first day in the world capital of fashion.

Od samego początku wiedzieliśmy, co będziemy robić zaraz po naszym przylocie do Włoch. Na tapecie, odwiedziny w jednej z typowych mediolańskich piekarni, która po zmroku zmienia się w oblegany przez miejscowych bar z przekąskami. Na zegarze nie wybiła jeszcze godzina 18.00, a knajpa pękała już w szwach! Na szczęście, nam udało się szybko zająć jeden z ostatnich stolików. Przyszliśmy tu głodni po podróży, w konkretnym celu - dowiedzieć się, na czym polega popularne włoskie aperitivo. I chyba nam się udało! Płacąc "jedyne" 8 euro, mogliśmy dowolnie i bez ograniczeń częstować się różnorodnymi przekąskami znajdującymi się przy barze (świeżo wypiekaną focaccią, pizzą i wieloma sałatkami), a to wszystko w akompaniamencie lokalnego piwa. Obiecaliśmy sobie, że następnym razem spróbujemy również słynnej mieszanki prosecco i aperolu w postaci orzeźwiającego Spritz'a.

From the very beginning we knew what we'll do right after our arrival in Italy - we wanted to visit one of the typical Milanese bakery, which after dark turns into a besieged by the local snack bar. The clock has not yet struck at 6 pm, and the pub was already full! Fortunately, we managed to get one of the last tables. We came here hungry after our journey for a specific purpose - to find out what a popular Italian aperitivo is. Paying "only" 8 euros, we could freely and without any restriction eat a various snacks located at the bar (like freshly baked focaccia, pizza and many salads), and all this in the accompaniment of local beer. We promised ourselves that next time we'll try the famous mix of prosecco and aperol in the form of refreshing Spritz.

Planując naszą krótką wyprawę do Mediolanu, zdecydowaliśmy się na świetnie zlokalizowany, ekologiczny hotel blisko centrum i głównego dworca kolejowego. Okazało się, że był to strzał w dziesiątkę, gdyż dzięki temu mogliśmy bezproblemowo i w miarę szybko poruszać się po mieście nie tylko metrem, ale również pieszo. Chociaż trzeba przyznać, że pierwszego dnia pogoda nas nie rozpieszczała - pomimo blisko 10 stopni powyżej zera, było pochmurno i dało się odczuć już wczesnozimową aurę. Ale kto by się tym przejmował, skoro jesteśmy w Mediolanie?

When we planning our short trip to Milan, we decided on a great location, eco-friendly hotel close to the city center and main railway station. It turned out that it was a hit, as we were able to smoothly and as quickly move around the city, not only by subway, but also on foot. Although we must admit that the first day the weather was not very good - despite nearly 10 degrees above zero, it was cloudy and we could already feel the winter in the air. But who cares, since we were in Milan?

Niewątpliwie największą atrakcją dla wielbicieli zabytków (ale zdecydowanie nie jedyną, jak niektórzy myślą!) oraz wizytówką miasta jest Duomo di Milano, a więc gotycka Katedra Narodzin św. Marii. Jeszcze nigdy na żadną katedrę, nawet Notre Dame w Paryżu, nie poświęciliśmy tyle czasu, co na zwiedzanie Duomo. A jest, co oglądać! Nam najbardziej spodobało się wnętrze katedry, klimatycznie oświetlane przez świece zapalane przez odwiedzających oraz piękny widok z dachu budynku, z którego przy dobrej widoczności można było podziwiać panoramę całego Mediolanu.

Without a doubt the biggest attraction (but definitely not the only one, as some think!) and a landmark of the city is the Duomo di Milano, the gothic Cathedral of the Nativity of St. Mary. We've never visited for so long before any of the cathedral, like we visited the Duomo, even Notre Dame in Paris. We most liked the interior of the cathedral, climatically illuminated by candles lit by visitors and a beautiful view from the roof of the building, from which on a clear day you can admire the panorama of Milan.

Inną główną atrakcją, której zresztą nie sposób przegapić będąc na Piazza del Duomo, jest zabytkowa Galeria Vittorio Emanuele II. To tutaj swoje butiki mają ulokowane takie domy mody jak Gucci, Prada, czy też Giorgio Armani. Nam oczywiście, zamiast zakupów, pozostał jedynie spacer i podziwianie pięknie przystrojonych już na święta witryn sklepowych. No i nie mogliśmy również zapomnieć o lokalnym zwyczaju obracania się na pięcie na jądrze pewnego byka, co miało nam przynieść szczęście i pomyślność. Oby wróżba się sprawdziła, inaczej będziemy musieli tam wrócić!

Another main attraction, which, moreover, can not be missed while being in the Piazza del Duomo, is the historic Gallery Vittorio Emanuele II. It is here, their boutiques have such a fashion houses like Gucci, Prada or Giorgio Armani. Of course we, instead of shopping, could only a stroll and admire the beautifully adorned for the holiday storefronts. And we could not forget about the local habit of rotating on the heel on the nucleus of a bull, which had us bring happiness and prosperity.

W końcu, po całodniowym zwiedzaniu, gdy już padaliśmy z nóg, przyszła pora na sedno naszego pobytu we Włoszech, a mianowicie prawdziwą mediolańską ucztę dla podniebienia! Idąc tym tropem, i kierując się od Duomo, daleko nie zaszliśmy i trafiliśmy na dobrze zapowiadającą się trattorię Non e Peccato (w tłumaczeniu "Niezłą"). Na szczęście, restauracja okazała się być nie tylko "niezłą", ale nawet "bardzo dobrą", chociaż wybór głównego dania przez A. w postaci specjału dnia, początkowo przysporzył J. o lekkie palpitacje serca ;). Gdy jednak po przystawce w postaci parmigiana di melanzane, na stole wylądował już homar, nie było odwrotu i, wprawdzie wspólnymi siłami, ale trzeba było sobie jakoś radzić ;). Na deser nie starczyło już miejsca, a przed nami jeszcze tego dnia pozostawała wizyta w słynnej operze La Scala i odwiedziny u Sforzów.

Finally, after a day of sightseeing, it was time for the core of our stay in Italy, namely real Milanese feast! Guided by the Duomo, we have not gone far and we found a budding Non Trattoria e Peccato (in translation "not bad"). Fortunately, the restaurant proved to be not only "not bad", but even "very good", although the choice of main course by A. in the form of specials, initially caused that J. had a slight heart palpitations ;). However, when after the appetizer in the form of parmigiana di melanzane on the table has landed a lobster, there was no turning back and we had to do with that ;). For dessert there was not enough space, and ahead of us was a visit to the famous La Scala opera house and visiting family of Sforza.

Teatro alla Scala przygotował dla nas bardzo miłą niespodziankę. Podczas naszej wizyty trafiliśmy na próbę generalną przedstawienia, które miało być wystawione w ten weekend. Niestety, występ mogliśmy jedynie podziwiać za oszkloną ścianą balkonu i nie było mowy o robieniu żadnych zdjęć, o czym co rusz przypominali nam zacni panowie ochroniarze. No cóż, przynajmniej mieliśmy okazję prawie za darmo liznąć trochę prawdziwej sztuki. Następnie udaliśmy się w stronę piętnastowiecznego Zamku Sforzów, po drodze wstępując do pobliskiej kawiarni na prawdziwe włoskie cappuccino i pyszne brioszki. Chyba nigdzie indziej na świecie kawa nie smakuje tak dobrze, jak we Włoszech!

Teatro alla Scala has prepared for us a very nice surprise. During our visit, lasted a final rehearsal of show, which was to be held this weekend. Unfortunately, we could only admire the show trough the glassed wall of the balcony and there was no question of taking any photos of what resembled guards. Well, at least we had the opportunity almost for free lick some real art. Then, we headed towards the fifteenth-century Sforzesco Castle, before that visiting a nearby cafe for a real Italian cappuccino and delicious brioches. Perhaps nowhere else in the world coffee does not taste as good as in Italy!

Rozgrzani gorącą kawą, ruszyliśmy dalej, aż naszym oczom ukazała nam się fasada Zamku Sforzów. Pięknie podświetlone nocą baszty i mury obronne, wywarły na nas całkiem spore wrażenie. Na dziedzińcu okazało się, że w ten weekend na Zamku organizowana jest impreza z cyklu "Book City Milano", gdzie mieszkańcy mogli spotkać się twarzą w twarz ze swoimi ulubionymi włoskimi autorami książek. Jako, że ni w ząb nie znamy włoskiego, postanowiliśmy przespacerować się aż do Parku Sempione i wrócić tu następnego dnia, aby na własne oczy ujrzeć jedno z ostatnich, niedokończonych dzieł Michała Anioła - Pietę Rondanini. Jeszcze tylko gorące panini na drogę i udaliśmy się już w stronę naszego hotelu. To był bardzo intensywny i inspirujący dzień. Dobranoc, Milano!

Warmed up by a hot coffee, we went on, until our eyes showed us the facade of the Sforzesco Castle. A beautifully lit at night bastions and walls, had on us pretty big impression. In the courtyard, it turned out that this weekend at the Castle was organized such a event like a "Book City Milano", where residents could meet face to face with their favorite Italian authors of the books. As we do not know Italian, we decided to take a walk up to the Sempione Park and come back the next day to see one of the last unfinished works of Michelangelo - Pietà Rondanini. We bought a hot panini and went in the direction of our hotel. It was a very intense and inspiring day. Goodnight, Milano!
