Największy z największych. Widoczny z kosmosu. Niezwykle popularny, corocznie odwiedzany przez miliony turystów. Czy Park Narodowy Wielkiego Kanionu Kolorado, pomimo takiego oblężenia turystów (na drogach dojazdowych do parku latem tworzą się korki!), uwiedzie nas swoją geologiczną historią? Takie pytanie zadawaliśmy sobie przed odwiedzinami w Grand Canyonie. Plan dnia: poranny wyjazd z Sedony, przejazd do Flagstaff, potem drogą 180 do Grand Canyon'u. Powrót malowniczą trasą Desert View, czyli na wschód drogą 64, a potem 89 na południe do Flagstaff, gdzie zaplanowaliśmy nocleg.

The biggest of the biggest. Visible from space. Extremely popular, annually visited by millions of tourists. Is the Grand Canyon National Park in spite of such a siege tourists (there are traffic jams on access roads to the park in the summer!) seduce us with their geological history? That was the question we asked ourselves before visiting the Grand Canyonie. Daily Schedule: Morning departure from Sedona and drive to Flagstaff, then road 180 to the Grand Canyonu. Back through the scenic road Desert View, which is on the east by 64 and then 89 south to Flagstaff for the night.
Wjazd do Grand Canyon'u przebiegł bardzo sprawnie. "Tylko" pierwsze trzy parkingi były pełne, w końcu to połowa września. Zwiedzanie zaczęliśmy od znajdującego się zaraz obok parkingów i informacji turystycznej Mather Point, najbardziej obleganego punktu widokowego w Grand Canyonie. Naturalny taras widokowy przepełniony był turystami wszelkich nacji. To tutaj, po raz pierwszy natknęliśmy się na naszych rodaków. Łatwo było ich rozpoznać, bo tylko Polacy przechodzili przez barierki, siadali na krawędziach, robili zdjęcia w stylu "zrób mi zdjęcie w locie", a nawet, dla "lepszego" efektu, pokusili się o robienie jaskółek (!) nad przepaścią... Szybko ulotniliśmy się z tego obleganego punktu, udając się szlakiem Rim Trail w stronę Yavapai Point and Geology Museum. Już kilka minut drogi od Mather Point na szlaku zrobiło się stosunkowo spokojnie i mogliśmy w końcu zmierzyć się z ogromem Grand Canyon'u.

The entrance to the Grand Canyonu was quite quick. "Only" the first three parking lots were full. We started walking located right next to the car park and tourist information Mather Point, the most crowded viewpoint in Grand Canyon. Natural observation deck was filled with tourists of all nationalities. It was here that the first time we meet our countrymen. It was easy to recognize them, because only the Poles passed through the gates, sat on the edge and took pictures in the style of make me a picture on the fly. We vanished from this besieged point, going along the trail toward the Rim Trail to Yavapai Point and Geology Museum. Just a few minutes from the Mather Point on the trail became relatively quiet and we could finally deal with the enormity of the Grand Canyonu.
W Yavapai Point and Geology Museum zrobiliśmy krótki postój. Mały budynek muzeum prezentuje geologiczną historię Grand Canyon'u. Historię tą można również poznać, idąc dalej szlakiem Rim Trail do Verkamp’s Visitor Center. Na nieco ponad kilometrowej trasie poznajemy rok po roku, milion po milionie lat historię powstawania Grand Canyon'u. W Verkamp’s Visitor Center znajduje się też przystanek darmowego autobusu jadącego do Hermits Rest, schroniska wybudowanego na krawędzi kanionu. Na przystanek trafiliśmy idealnie i po około pół godziny dojechaliśmy do Hermits Rest. Wypiliśmy tam kawę i powoli był już czas, aby wracać na parking. Przed nami droga do Desert View, gdzie mieliśmy podziwiać zachód słońca nad Grand Canyonem.

At the Yavapai Point and Geology Museum we made a short stop. Small building of the museum presents the geological history of the Grand Canyonu. The history can also be learned by following the trail Rim Trail to Verkamp's Visitor Center. In just over a kilometer long route we meet year after year, million after million years of the history of the formation of the Grand Canyonu. In Verkamp's Visitor Center there is a free bus bus to Hermits Rest, shelter built on the edge of the canyon. We came for bus just on time and after about half an hour we got to Hermits Rest. We drank coffee and slowly there was time to get back to the parking lot. In front of us the way to Desert View where we watch the sunset over the Grand Canyon.
W drodze powrotnej kierowca postanowił opowiedzieć pasażerom historię o Grand Canyonie. Pewien człowiek, jeden z pierwszych, którzy osiedlili się w kanionie, na pytanie o to jak dobrze zna kanion, wszystkim odpowiadał: "Nie ma osoby, która znałaby go lepiej. Wszystko zaczęło się od tego, że osiedliłem się tutaj, gdzie jest teraz kanion. Po jakimś czasie zasadziłem warzywa obok swojego domu. Pewnego dnia zauważyłem, że marchewka w moim ogródku się rusza. Gdy podszedłem bliżej zauważyłem, że jakiś gryzoń podgryza ją od dołu, więc zacząłem kopać. I tak wykopałem Grand Canyon". Pytany o to, czemu opowiada taką historię powstania Grand Kanionu, która nie ma najmniejszego sensu, odpowiadał, że jest ona tak absurdalna, że jeszcze nikt w nią nie uwierzył, ale jego mały sklepik jest dzięki temu bardziej popularny. Wszystko to do czasu, jak opowiedział tą histrorię małej 6-latce. Dziewczynka po wysłuchaniu opowieści o wykopaniu Grand Canyon'u, z pewną powagą zapytała: "A co zrobiłeś z tym całym piaskiem, który wykopałeś?" Na to pytanie nie potrafił odpowiedzieć. Nie spodziewał się, że ktokolwiek jego historię potraktuje poważnie. W takiej miłej atmosferze wracaliśmy autobusem z Hermits Rest na parking. Słońce chyliło się ku zachodowi, więc czym prędzej wsiedliśmy do auta i ruszyliśmy na wschód drogą widokową Desert View Drive. Przepiękne widoki Wielkiego Kanionu Kolorado w zachodzącym słońcu były wisienką na torcie przekonującą nas, aby przyznać, że Park Narodowy Wielkiego Kanionu zasługuje w pełni na swoją wielką popularność. Warto jednak uciec od tłoku w punktach widokowych obok informacji turystycznej i odwiedzić zdecydowanie ciekawsze miejsca na trasie Rim Trail. Istnieje też możliwość zejścia do samego dna kanionu, jednak wędrówka takim szlakiem trwa przynajmniej dwa dni.

He did not expect that anyone who treats his story seriously. In this relaxed atmosphere we came back by Hermits Rest bus to the parking lot. The sun was going down so as quickly as possible so we got into the car and headed east to scenic drive - Desert View Drive. Spectacular views of the Grand Canyon in the setting sun were the icing on the cake compelling us to admit that the Grand Canyon National Park fully deserves its great popularity. It good to try to be away from the crowds at view points next to tourist information and much more interesting place to visit from Rim Trail. You also can go down to the bottom of the canyon, however, the trail takes at least two days.

Zachód nad kanionem może i piękny, ale człowiek jeść musi. Do Flagstaff została ponad godzina drogi, więc musieliśmy zgłośnić muzykę w aucie, aby nie słyszeć donośnego burczenia w brzuchach. Ponieważ Flagstaff słynie z tego, że przebiega przez nie historyczna droga 66, nie mogliśmy przepuścić takiej okazji, aby nie zameldować się w typowo amerykańskiej restauracji stylizowanej na lata 60., serwującej burgery do stolików ustawionych wzdłóż okien. Do Galaxy Dinner, znajdującego sie na Route 66, wparowaliśmy z takim impetem, że kierownik musiał gonić za nami i prosić, abyśmy poczekali na stolik. Faktycznie, nie zauważyliśmy karteczki na wejściu, z prośbą o zaczekanie na przydział stolika. No cóż, zdarza się. Czekając na stolik zrobiliśmy kilka zdjęć wystroju, swoją drogą bardzo klimatycznego. Mało brakowało a A. odpaliłaby starą szafę grającą stojącą zaraz przy wejściu.

Sunset over the canyon can and beautiful, but a man has to eat. The Flagstaff was over an hour away so we had to set up louder music in the car, just do not hear a ringing in our stomachs rumble. Because Flagstaff is known Route 66 is crossing this town, we could not pass up this opportunity to not check into a typical American restaurant serving burgers to tables arranged along the windows. We came into the Galaxy Dinner, located on Route 66, with such force that the manager had to chase us and ask us to wait for a table. In fact, we did not see a card at the entrance, with a request to wait for the seating Well, we were hungry, it happens. While waiting for a table we took some pictures design, by the way very interesting. A. almost started old jukebox standing right at the entrance. It was closed.

Na szczęście, na stolik nie czekaliśmy długo. A. wypatrzyła doskonałą przystawkę - specjalność zakładu: frytki polane roztopionym serem. Do tego zamówiliśmy piwo z Kolorado. Na drugie danie J. wybrał klasycznego burgera z cebulką, pomidorem, sałatą i... ogórkiem kiszonym. A. wybrała danie dnia, czyli steka z dodatkową zupą. Pierwsze na stole wylądowały frytki. Chcieliśmy zamówić dwie porcje, ale kerlnerka zasugerowała, że jest to dość duży koszyk, więc pozostaliśmy przy jednej. Trzeba przyznać, że frytki, zarówno te polane roztopionym serem, jak i te zaserwowane jako dodatek do burgera były klasą samą w sobie. Po chwili A. otrzymała swoją zupę. Było to coś w rodzaju zupy warzywnej, coś jak zupa fasolowa tylko, że ugotowana z fasolki szparagowej. Bardzo dobra. Stek i burger również były na bardzo wysokim poziomie, a +3 do smaku dodawało im to, że jedliśmy je przy słynnej Route 66.

Fortunately we don't need to wait long for a table. A. choose an excellent starter - specialty of the house: French fries topped with melted cheese. For this we ordered a beer from Colorado. For the second course J. chose the classic burger, with onion, tomato, lettuce and .. pickled cucumber. A. chose the daily special - steak with extra soup. The first one on the table was fries. We wanted to order two portions, but waitres suggested that this is a pretty big basket, so we stayed with only one. I must admit that the fries, both ones, topped with melted cheese and served to those in addition to the burger were a class by itself. After a while, A. got her soup. It was a kind of vegetable soup, bean soup but cooked from green beans. Very good. The steak and burger were also very tasty, and another +3 to taste was added because we ate them on the famous Route 66.
